Prosthetic Engineering Challenge

Design and build a working prosthetic mechanism, then test and improve its movement, reliability, and mechanical design.

Educational overview

About this project

How can a mechanical design reproduce a useful movement? Students explore the relationship between anatomy and engineering by building a functional prosthetic model. Teams test movement and reliability, then use those observations to improve their mechanism. Models are for education, not patient use.

What students explore

  • Human movement
  • Anatomy
  • Prosthetic devices
  • Engineering
  • Functional testing

Taking part

This activity is part of the YMIC library. When it is offered, detailed instructions and any internal materials are shared through Google Classroom. Participation is optional.
